Columbia University's Science Honors Program

Columbia University's Science Honors Program (SHP) offers enrichment courses in science and mathematics on Saturday mornings throughout the school year to 700 students who have been selected from approximately 750 high schools in the metropolitan NY area. Next years's SHP will have openings for 400 new students. Applications must now be in the 11th, 10th, or 9th grade and should have a strong interest and exceptional ability in science and mathematics.

The program uses an online application process which students can access at

Each applicant will be asked to do the following:

  • Submit an online application.
  • Request that the high school mail an official transcript directly to SHP.
  • Request that a teacher, guidance counselor, or principal submit an online recommendation letter.
  • Take a 3-hour entrance exam at Columbia on April 5 or April 26, 2014.

The deadline for the SHP receipt of the student online applications is February 27, 2014. Mailed transcripts and online letters of recommendations must be received by the SHP no later than March 20, 2012. Admission decisions will be announced by June 18, 2014.

Toyota Teen Driver Video Challenge

Help save lives and win through Toyota Teen Driver, a program created by Discovery Education and Toyota.

All you have to do is create a 60 to 90 second video that promotes safe driving for a chance to win $15,000 and the opportunity to re-shoot your entry video into a TV-ready PSA.

Videos must be submitted by March 13, 2014.

NJPSA Student Leadership Scholarship

The New Jersey Principals and Supervisors Association (NJPSA) is providing 25 student leadership scholarships of $2,000 each. They will will be awarded to graduating seniors for their demonstrated leadership in school activities.

Eligibility is limited to graduating high school seniors who have demonstrated leadership for participation in co-curricular activities other than athletics. BTHS is able to nominate one student in the class of 2014 for this opportunity. 

To apply, submit the following to Mr. Brown's mailbox by Friday, February 14:

  • A one page essay on the topic "The Importance of Student Involvement in School Activities." 
  • A resume indicating the leadership positions you've held and your contributions to BTHS while in these positions.

White House Student Film Festival

First Annual White House Student Film Festival 

President Obama has an assignment for you ... 

A video contest created just for K-12 students, and whose finalists will have their short films shown at the White House. Finalist videos may also be featured on the White House website, YouTube channel, and social media pages.

The Assignment:

Our schools are more high-tech than ever. There are laptops in nearly every classroom. You can take an online course on Japanese -- and then video chat with a kid from Japan. You can learn about geometry through an app on your iPad. So, what does it all mean? We’re looking for videos that highlight the power of technology in schools. Your film should address at least one of the following themes:

  • How you currently use technology in your classroom or school. 
  • The role technology will play in education in the future.

Summer Business Leadership Academy 

 *Opportunity for Juniors*

Hosted at Mercy College in New York, the Business Leadership Academy is a highly selective one week course that allows high school students to be exposed to real world executives and learn what it takes to become a leader. Last year, over 2,000 candidates were interviewed and 200 were selected. There is no charge for tuition and students live in the dorm for free

At Mercy College's Westchester campus on the Hudson river and their  midtown Manhattan campus, students experience the following:

Executive Lectures:

  • "Know Yourself" - Matching Personalities to Careers 
  • "Life as a CEO" - Business Strategy 
  • "Create a Million Dollar Business" -Entrepreneurship 
  • "Master Investors" - Wall Street Careers 
  • "From CIA to CFO" - Accounting Careers 
  • "Luxury Branding" - Marketing / Advertising Careers

Interactive Student Activites:

  • Stock Trading Simulation Game 
  • Student Business Plan Competition 
  • Networking Events with Young Professionals 
  • Team Building Exercises 
  • Interviewing and Negotiating Skills 
  • Social Media, Blogs, and Viral Marketing

At the Academy students also visit many Fortune 500 companies, including Goldman Sachs, Price Waterhouse Coopers, Young & Rubicam, J. Walter Thompson, Bloomberg, and MTV, among others.

  • June 29- July 3 
  • July 6- July 11 
  • July 13- July 18

Applying:

Generally, they look for juniors in high school with a GPA above 90 with a passion to major in business. Beyond that we look for candidates that show enthusiasm, charisma, and public speaking skills.
